In leprosy the best and most effective method to reduce disabilities
is the early detection of new cases. Although there is still much
more to do, great strides have been taken in prevention of disabilities,
as evident from the reported patient satisfaction. Much has been
done by the project to inform the general public on the signs and
symptoms of leprosy and on the need to come forward if leprosy is
suspected as well as educated patients how to lake care of their
own disabilities. Ulcer care camps have been organised for this
purpose and in Tamil Nadu patients in need are provided with a self
care kit. Also micro cellular rubber (MCR) footwear is available.
The specially designed footwear used in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh,
is reported to be very well accepted by the patients.
