A major contribution to combating leprosy was the introduction of safe and effective Mutli Drug Therapy (MDT) in easily manageable blister packs in very large areas among large populations in the states of Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa.

This mode of packaging was pilot tested by DANLEP. Till 1995, drugs supply by DANLEP has been regular and no shortages have occurred. As a result, 100 per cent MDT coverage in all supported districts was achieved. From 1995 onwards, total drug requirement was, and is, being provided by WHO.
